I found out the hard way car was started in the drive way and stopped engine was trashed mechanic mentioned it was an interference engine which I had never heard of before. Timing chain slipped causing the pistons to collide with the valves cam shafts were scored . you basically need another engine
The SOHC 2.0 Ford engine is NOT an interference engine
According to Gates ( they make timing belts etc. ) The SOHC engine IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE The DOHC engine is NOT an interference engine in the 2000 Ford Focus
it is not an interference engine.

From 2000 to 2004 they all had a belt that must be replaced at 120,000 miles. The DOHC engine is an interference engine. The SOHC engine is not. Starting in 2005 they have a chain.
I will say it is a non interference engine in the z tech. My research and conversations with ford mechanics say that the z tech Mazda ford engine is the same in the contour/mystique ford escort zx2 and some Mazda labelled vehicles. If info and research says the escort or the countour is non interference then I would believe the same with the Focus.
