Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a powerful greenhouse gas that is contributing to global warming.

There are other greenhouse gases caused by human activity, namely Nitrous Oxide, methane, and some CFCs. All these greenhouse gases are causing an enhanced greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.

Deforestation is another cause. Before they were cut down, forests removed large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Oxygen was released, and the carbon was stored in the trees. Almost 50% of a tree is carbon.

If you were to compare the data of the increase of CO2, and the average global temperature, you will find the as the CO2 level increases, the temperature tends to increase too.

Does global warming have an effect on volcanos?

No, Global warming has no effect on volcanoes. It's the other way round. Volcanoes can increase global warming slightly if the emit carbon dioxide. And they can reduce global warming for a while if their dust and ash block out and reflect the sun's rays.

What gases cause global warming and how?

Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane, mostly) cause global warming by increasing their levels in the atmosphere. This turns the benign greenhouse effect into an accelerated greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.
