in the key
You don't that's why there's a key.
Check to see if you are using the correct key, the 2002 Nissan Xterra has a chip in the key, but it also comes with a valet key. If the valet key accidentally gets placed in the ignition it will not crank, on some vehicles it completely shuts the vehicle down and you have to get it towed into the dealership, try using the other key that came with your vehicle.
I called the dealership and they said no to confirm I gave them VIN it does not have a chip in it.
To turn off the alarm, you insert the the key in the drivers door lock and turn the key to the right two times.
No. I have both a 2001 LE and a 2005 LE. The latter has a chip inside the key, where as the 2001 doesn't.

On the side of plastic part of key, check for codes. most keys can be opened easily so you can check for it in the hollow area. look for small slot to open key.
