Well.... The Opéra Garnier (there are now two Opera houses in Paris, and oddly enough the older one now stages mainly Ballet) is indeed built over an underground river - actually an old branch of the Seine. The basement of the Opéra was separated from the water by the building of a double wall. Gaston Leroux, in the original 'Phantom' book, situates the Phantom's 'torture chamber' in the space between the two walls. So the geography of the book is based on truth. it is interesting to note that the chandelier actually fell, too - on 20 May 1896. Mny people were injured, but only one died, a woman in the 4th balcony.
