No, other parties are just as "legitimate". They just don't muster the votes to get their candidates into office. All true democracies permit candidates of all political stripes, even neo-nazis, polygamists, and the general gamut of whackos. But these are fringe groups who are more nuisance than effective.
There have been some big " bumps in the road" but US democracy has generally kept on a good path.
