Phytoplankton live near the surface of the ocean because they need sunlight like all green plants. They also need water and nutrients to live. Phytoplankton use water and CO2 to grow, but phytoplankton still need other vitamins and minerals, like iron to survive.

When the surface of the ocean is cold, the deeper parts of the ocean bring these nutrients to the surface and the plankton live. But, when the surface of the ocean is warm, as in El Niño, the ocean does not bring as many of these essential nutrients and the phytoplankton die. That causes a major problem because phytoplankton are at the base of the food chain. So, when the population of phytoplankton is reduced almost the entire food chain is effected.

Do Sea Otters live in the benthic or pelagic environment?

Sea otters live in the pelagic environment. They are able to survive in the high levels of salt, regulate their body temperature and are able to adapt to the low-oxygen environment.

Do the blue whales live in the benthic habitat?

Benthic is the seafloor or floor of a lake. Clams would live there. Whales live in the Pelagic zone. I'm in biology now and we just had that question!

Benthos are organisms that live?

Benthic animals live in the benthic zone of the ocean. These animals include corals, sponges, anemones, jellyfish, mollusks, and other animals.

Do sea otters live in the pelagic environment?

Sea Otters do not life in a Pelagic Zone, as this would be a deep sea environment. Instead, they live in the near shore ecosystem and often go on land.

Organisms that live above the ocean floor are apart of the pelagic environment

What type of environment does the box jellyfish live in?

Do jellyfish live in coral reef?

No, Jellyfish are pelagic organisms, this means that they live floating about in the upper layers of the open ocean, and while they can swim up and down in the water they are carried around in the ocean by water currents.

How do benthos move?

Animals that live in the benthic zone get their food from food that sinks down from above. The benthic zone is another way of saying ocean floor.
