The term Redcoat described the red uniforms worn by the majority of soldiers of the British Army. From the 17th to the early 20th century, a scarlet coat was a standard part of the uniform for most British soldiers.
Some members do, on ceremonial occasions. If you have ever seen the "changing of the guard" at Buckingham Palace, the guards wear red coats and tall bearskin hats. The British Army has several regiments with a proud history going back several hundred years, and a few of these (or a portion of them) are assigned to more or less permanent duty for ceremonies and parades in London, where they wear the traditional regimental uniform, many of which feature the red coat. Each regiment had at one time a different prescribed dress uniform. Long ago a knowledgeable person could tell at a glance to what unit a man belonged, just by his uniform. Today, when in the field, the British Army wears field dress or camouflage, just like every other army, and wore this type of battle dress through both world wars.
In the American Revolution and Napoleon wars, yes.
After 1800 the Uniform was ceased, which lead to the Brodie Helmet for WWI and II, which lead to today's military headware.
