Without a producer there is no food. Without food there is no food chain.
Even meat eaters cannot survive without the plant eaters, who cannot survive without the plants (producers).

However, if it is though about, the producer would need to begin with a consumer in order to even have a product to maintain a food chain. This is the chicken or the egg first type of thing. You cannot have one without the other.
