The 4 noble truths are so important because they are the foundation of the Buddhist teachings. If you don't understand the them and if you haven't found out for yourself how true the 4 noble truths are then you can't really follow a Buddhist path. This has to do with the fact that we all want to be happy and we want to be free from suffering. In order to achieve that we need to understand suffering and what its cause is and we need to understand happiness and its cause. This is exactly what the 4 noble truths describe. By studying the 4 noble truths we can understand what the causes for suffering are and what the causes for happiness are - that includes ultimate happiness or enlightenment. Once we can distinguish these two different sets of causes in our own lives we can start attaining happiness and overcoming suffering. And the order in which the 4 noble truths are presented shows how we should follow the Buddhist path and reach our goal. That life is suffering BUT it has a way out!
The eight fold path (im pretty sure)
Suffering ends when one reaches Nirvana, which is a state of being beyond all earthly pains and distresses. Nirvana is reached by acceptance of anger, ignorance, and attachment, which allows for the free flow of wisdom to the mind.

Zen Buddhism is practiced primarily taking the backward step--which is meditation called zazen, in order to develop right concentration and right mindfulness and bringing that awareness to every area of your life. Studying impermanence, emptiness, causation (karma), and selflessness, will over time naturally arise through the study of the self through zazen. However, like many other Buddhist traditions, the foundational ideas begin with the Four Noble Truths about suffering, the origin of suffering, and the cessation of suffering taught by the Buddha, and the Eightfold Path that leads to the cessation of suffering.

Like many aspects of Buddhism, there is no required order for the Eightfold Path. You don't have to do step one before you proceed to step two. They are not really steps, just a collection of suggestions that would help to lead a more skillful and less painful life. They aren't requirements to be a successful Buddhist.
