The Gulf Stream is a large and powerful current that begins in the Gulf of Mexico. It brings along with it the warm temperatures of the Gulf. It actually runs its way up the eastern coast of the United States. It has the affect of making the island - nation of Bermuda a tropical place. It's strange in that it's only 600 miles southeast of New York City. The Gulf Stream has enough strength to arc over the North Atlantic Ocean and makes a climate impact as faraway as the British Isles.

Changes in the normal Gulf of Mexico temperatures will affect the climates of all the areas that it passes. Should the Gulf's temperature move lower or higher, the areas it now passes by and passes through will carry that change along with it.

The North Atlantic Drift and the Gulf Stream bring in warm weather/water from the Caribbean Sea. This then travels all the way up to not just the British Isles, but mostly Western Europe in general. While it does not seem like it makes Europe all that warm, it actually significantly increases the temperature of Europe. For other areas with the same latitude as Europe, they are much colder. For example, Norway's city of Brønnøysund is about 40 degrees C (104 degrees F) warmer than Yakutsk, an area of Russia.

These two Ocean currents keep the UK and western Europe from suffering the extremes of winter shared by those in the same northerly latitudes but not in the path of these warm currents

The gulf stream is an ocean current that flows from South America up the East Coast of the United States across the Atlantic and past the West Coast of Scotland. It affects the airflow and weather of vast areas because its direction is ever-changing temperature is warmer than the surrounding waters and this helps to keep the UK waters free from ice during the winter and the average temperature warmer in winter. It is inevitable that the weather in Scotland would be changed at some time by the gulf stream.

We don't know yet. The oceans are warming now, more slowly than the land, but they hold the heat longer. Scientists suggest that the warm oceans may change the direction, speed and temperature of the ocean currents. If the Gulf Stream changes it will mean much colder weather for Western Europe, especially the British Isles.

Climate often redistributes warm air to and from the Gulf Stream. This can increase wind and precipitation in the area.

How might global warming lead to the disruption of the gulf stream?

Extra heat in the oceans may affect the movement and direction of the ocean currents. the Gulf Stream, which brings warm water to Western Europe, might cool or fail, bringing cooler conditions to Britain and France.

Global warming would make the earth warmer. However, some parts, for example, Britain, may become colder for a while, especially if the Gulf Stream cools or slows.

What will happen to the ocean currents as a result of global warming?

The warming of the planet may change the paths and movements of the ocean currents. If the Gulf Stream, for example, stops, then Britain will become much colder.

What type of global warming is there in Wales?

There is only one type of global warming, the increase in temperature averaged all over the planet. The results of global warming, that is, climate change, will be different around the world. Changes in the Gulf Stream may make Wales colder initially rather than warmer, for example.
