get the key and insert said key to ignition, once inserted turn ignition to the right and BAMM your on your way.
Because 99 model has automatic headlights, in order to turn it off you have to turn the headlight switcher off, and also remove keys from the ignition.
You can remove the headlight by removing the retaining screws. Remove the headlight wiring. The headlight should easily come out.
Your headlight wipers should come on when you spray your windshield washer fluid.

Your ignition is probably fine what you need to check is the starter solenoid, more than likely that is what has gone bad. To find it follow the positive cable from the battery and it should lead you to it. If you turn your ke to the on position and touch both terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver the motorcycle will turn over.
The headlight can be accessed from the engine compartment. Pushed the headlight container in and turn at the same time. The headlight will come free so it can be changed.
They should come on automatically when the ignition is switched on. On my '87 xv535, the starter switch disengages the headlight in order to give full power to the starter. The starter button would stick very slightly when I released it, preventing the headlight form coming back on. (Very frustrating trying to figure this out.) Try pulling the starter button out. I never took it apart, but I assume the spring inside the switch was weak.
They come on when you turn on the windshield washer, but only when the headlights are turned on.
If you look strait at the headlight on the turn signal side you will see a small screw. remove it and the light should come out.
open it in the ignition switch. turn the key counter clockwise from OFF position. Don't push it.
On an 02 There are 2 VERY small allen screws under the housing. Remove them and turn the lens counter clockwise.
