Nobody can say exactly when Christianity was first introduced into the British Isles. One legend is that St. Joseph of Arimathea and a band of Christians come to England in the first century. Another tradition says that some of the Apostles ( bishops), notably St. Paul, introduced Christianity to Britain in the first century. Another story says that in the second century a British King wrote to the bishop of Rome (the pope) asking for Christian missionaries.

The first historical record of the English church is in 314, when British bishops were recorded among those in attendance at the Council of Arles in France.

Anglicans held to the same primitive Christianity practiced all over the world and, being isolated from the mainland and its debates, did not develop in sync with Rome, but, rather, tried to uphold the faith of the early undivided church.

Later on, the English church voted to come under the Roman see, after missionaries from Rome established new churches who's customs were different from those planted earlier. The major points of disagreement at the time were how a monk's haircut should be done and the date Easter should be celebrated.

Eventually, papal taxes, which took more than the civil government exasperated the English people, so that parliament passed laws curtailing papal taxes and authority and calling on the king to relieve them from papal taxes. The final split occurred when the pope, now incarcerated by a relative of the Queen of England, procrastinated for seven years about declaring an annulment to the marriage of the King and Queen of England, that he had previously suggested, so as to insure an heir to the English throne. The local archbishop called his own court and granted the annulment. The pope objected, then died six months later. The next pope excommunicated the King and ordered his citizens to what would have been high treason. The local church councils then declared that the pope had no authority in England, and the English parliament declared the king the head of the church in England.

Was William Bradford Catholic?

William Bradford was a Puritan, a member of the Church of England or Anglican Church. The Anglican Church considers itself "reformed Catholic", not Protestant, in that its clergy trace their ordination back through Catholic succession to the Apostles. It is not, however, Roman Catholic, as it is not under the authority of the Roman Pope. The Puritans were quite intolerant toward Roman Catholics.

What is an Anglican?

An Anglican is a member of The Anglican Communion which is a branch of Christianity that encompasses the Church of England and many other world-wide Churches which trace their spiritual succession back to the Archbishop of Canterbury. These member Churches are known as being a part of the "Anglican Communion" The Archbishop of Canterbury is the spiritual figurehead of the "Anglican Communion" and is based in 'The Church of England'. The Anglican Church was formally organized in 1539 when The Church in England became Independent from Rome under the reign of Henry VIII. The Anglican Church considers itself a "bridge Church" between Catholic and Protestant, being both and neither at the same time. The Anglican Church encompasses the traditions, rites, sacraments, and creeds of the ancient Holy Catholic Church which it is a part of, holding strong to the authority of the priesthood and necessity for bishops in apostolic succession. Yet, it also considers itself Protestant in that their is a significant "evangelical" or "protestant" faction within the Anglican Communion. The Anglican Communion has many different schools of thought, some are very Catholic (high Church) some are more Protestant (low church) and some are in between(broad church). The Book of Common Prayer is what holds all Anglicans together, it is the universal doctrine, discipline and liturgy for all Anglicans world-wide and it is what holds all Anglicans together, it is the foundation of the history of Anglicanism and it is the basis of Anglican worship. The central core of Anglican worship is the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist (the Mass, Lords Supper, Holy Communion) as it is believed to be truly the presence of Jesus Christ.

Is Apostolic Succession true for Catholics?

Yes, it holds true for the Catholic Church which is the only church that can trace its inheritance back to the apostles in an unbroken chain. Some others, the Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches, claim a form of doctrinal succession but can not claim actual apostolic succession since they divorced themselves from the Catholic Church The leadership of the Catholic Church also traces its origins back to St. Peter as the first pope. Some argue that Peter was never in Rome but Peter, himself, tells us he was:"The Church that is in Babylon saluteth you, and so doth my son Mark" (1 Peter 5:13). That Babylon stands for Rome, as usual amongst pious Jews, and not for the real Babylon as the Church had not spread at that time to Babylon and there were no Christians there.
