In Newport Rhode Island prior to the American Revolution, pineapples were frequently placed on doorsteps or gateposts. This was usually done by ship captains, or by owners of ships after they had completed commercial voyages to return home. The Pineapple represented wealth, success and hospitality resulting from those journeys. Through the current day you may still see brass pineapples on door knockers or as concrete ornaments atop gateposts. These practices are a reminder of the successful colonial merchants.
