Australia has a Prime Minister; America has a President. Within each country, these positions of leadership are the highest in the land. If the Australian PM acts in a manner that could be damaging to the country (as in the case of Gough Whitlam in 1975) he can be dismissed by the Governor-General. Because the USA emerged to become one of the world's major forces in the 20th century, the American President is probably seen to have more power, because he is more "obvious" and more prominent on the world's stage.
