Absolutely. The Salvation Army helps in many ways around the United States. For example: The Salvation Army conducts regular church services, runs homeless shelters, rehab centers, and thrift stores, helps in times of natural disaster (i.e. Hurricane Irene's destruction in North Carolina.)
The Salvation Army's southeastern states also donated 8.7 million dollars to world services in Africa in 2010; however, I do not know what the rest of the country raised.
George Scott Railton was commissioned by William Booth to bring The Salvation Army to the US.

William Booth started it in 1865 (although it wasn't called "Salvation Army" until about 1880.
Not a specific place, the founder; William Booth, saw injured war troops and that inspired him to make the charity.

Well for a start it would help if you told us in WHICH army.
No, not at all. First, it should be noted that the Salvation Army is not a real army-- it used the imagery of the military to refer to the battle against sin. It is a Christian social service organization, which feeds the poor, reaches out to the homeless, and tries to share Christianity with those who seem to need religion in their life. In the US, we have separation of church and state, so while the government might appreciate a Christian (or Jewish or Muslim or Hindu) charity's good work, it cannot officially endorse that work.
Contact the Salvation Army's main number 1-888-999-2769 anywhere in the US to find out how to donate your car locally. You can get some more information on this charitable program at http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn_2.nsf/vw-dynamic-index/abc30d49bf9684318525743d00519d07?opendocument
