Thetis was a nereiad, son of Nereus and Doris (another nereiad). She is an immortal, and doesn't die. She is a sea goddess, in charge of 50 other nereiads listed in Homer's The Iliad.Zeus & Poseidon both wanted her, but when Themis prophesied that her son would become greater than his father, both brothers made a pact that Thetis would not marry an immortal so that the strife of her son would be displaced from Olympia to Earth. She was married against her will to the mortal Peleus, and their son was Achilles, arguably the hero of The Iliad. The golden apple debacle occured when Eris (the goddess of Strife) was not invited to the wedding, and concocted a scheme to get Athena, Aphrodite & Hera angry with each other. Zeus owed Thetis a favor since she unchained him when the other gods & goddesses were trying to overthrow him. She calls in that favor when Agamemnon insults Achilles by taking his prize, the girl Briseis. Zeus allows the Trojans to slaughter many Achaeans (Greeks) until they realize how desperate they are for Achilles' help, and beg him to return to the war.
