Turning off the lights does not actually save energy; energy not burned by the lights is simply run into the ground. It will save you $$, but not save energy. However, turning off the lights does send a market signal to electricity producers, informing them that current electricity production is too high (because it is being wasted) and decreasing future loads.

Conserve energy? It completely stops the use of it. How much more can you conserve?

update: Hopefully the person above is taking their own advice and not voting or reproducing :-) "It completely stops the use of [energy]?" No, it stops your use of it, but the energy company still burns it if you don't use it. Only when we stop using it on a large scale does the energy company not produce as much, and we then save. Turning off that light right now? Earth hour? Not saving the planet or any energy. Only if we do it ALL THE TIME.

No.... if you leave the switch on, you are consuming electricity. The only thing you MAY be saving if you leave something on, is wear and tear on the item (i.e. a computer will do better if it is left running or off rather than being turned on or off repeatedly in a short period of time, over and over).

Yes. Turning off the lights saves money because they will not be using electricity. You may also save money - and not waste electricity - when you will be out of the house/office for some time by: unplugging TV sets, stereo units and those power adapters {used to recharge cell phones, laptop computers, etc.}

Have someone stand at the meter. Have someone turn the lights on and off. See if the meter speeds up when someone turns on the lights. Rumor is that it does not. You can write it up for your science project.

according to Mythbusters, turning your lights on and off is the way to go. there is an almost unmeasurable amount of energy used when you turn you lights on because it is so small. leaving your lights on all the time wastes far more energy then turning them off when you leave the room and turning them back on when you come back.

When a light is on it uses some electricity. When it is off it uses none. The process of turning the light on uses slightly more power for a very short time. It's worth turning the light off if it's going to be off for ten seconds.

Yes, turning a light on and off as oppose to leaving it on indefinitely does conserve energy.
