No. They're not even in the same class- Xanax is an anti-anxiety drug, whereas Percocet is a Schedule II narcotic. While drugs like Xanax are used occasionally to augment pain treatment, they aren't the same types of drug.

Yes they are very much related.

Oxycodone and hydrocodone are both semi-synthetic opioids derived from the opiate alkaloid thebaine. Simply put opium has a bunch of different substances, most notably are morphine and codeine, the others are not really used medically but some like thebaine are use to create semi-synthetic drugs.

Both hydrocodone and oxycodone have a very similar molecular structure as codeine but some slight changes are made, the difference between oxycodone and hydrocodone is that oxycodone has a specifically placed hydroxyl group (-OH), where as hydrocodone does not have that and codeine only has hydrogen.

Oxycodone, when taken orally, is more potent than hydrocodone, codeine, or morphine.

Hydrocodone is the most used opioid in North America, in fact it is the most prescribed drug. Many brands with hydrocodone exist like Vicodin, Lortab, Lorcet, and Norco. Hydrocodone is always mixed with another medication, typically acetaminophen (Tylenol). Generally hydrocodone is used for moderate to moderately severe pain.

Oxycodone is available with other drugs such as acetaminophen (Percocet) and Aspirin (Percodan). It is also made as a single ingredient (OxyIR) and a continuous-release formation of oxycodone (OxyContin) is used for chronic, continuous pain. Oxycodone is used for moderate to severe pain.

Common opioids and their conversions:

10 mg of oral hydrocodone = 6.667 of oxycodone = 66.67 mg of codeine= 10 mg of morphine= 2.5 mg of hydromorphone= 3.333 mg of oxymorphone= 0.1 mg of transdermal fentanyl (4 mcg/hour).
