white wine breaks down red wine. also baking soda and white vinegar. i actually soaked my sweater over night in a teaspoon of woolite, a cup of hydrogen peroxide and cold water. it works. just keep it wet until the stain is gone.

Some plant material makes better and stronger dye than others. Grapes (wine) are one of the longer lasting ones. Also, the alcohol content in wine helps "set" the dye (or stain).
