The heart accelerates it's rate when the body is stressed by a bacterial or viral infection, especially when accompanied by fever. If you are referring to a common bug that causes colds, gastronteritus, sinus headeches, etc., then the heart rate will rise in order to circulate immune cells and oxygen to the body in order to facilitate healing. Also emotional stress, anxiety, and many other conditions could cause an escalation in heart rate and rhythm. You should have your blood pressure checked ( nost drugstores have a machine for this, and keep a record of it. But if you continue to have these symptoms, your should contact your Doctor to make an appoinment for a consult, diagnosis and treatment. The doc might do an echocardiogram of the heart, an EKG, and/or have blood drawn for the presence of certain cardiac enzymes that shed following an MI (heart attack, MI is short for myocardial infarction). You didn't mention your age, so if you're fairly young--less than 30 years old then your risk of a cardiac mishap is very unlikely. If this continues you must see a Doctor, Nurse Practioner, or a Physician's Assistant. You probably are just getting used to strenuous activity, especially in the summer heat. The heat alone will cause the seart rate to accelerate. But as I said, you absolutely must see a health-care provider if your symptoms worsen or continue. Good luck, I'll be praying foy you, --Marilyn

Where can I get more advice on low heart rates?

Bradycardia, or low heart rate is not a cause of concern unless you are experiencing symptoms. Athletes very commonly have extremely low heart rates (even as low as 40 beats per minute!) without consequence due to their endurance training. If your low heart rate is causing you to pass out or feel sick, this could be a problem with the SA node, or pacemaker in your heart. Whenever the natural pacemaker in your heart is sick, other slower pacemakers take over to keep the heart beating. It is possible that you may be in need of a pacemaker. You should discuss this with your doctor.
