Transformers do not work with DC.

Transformers are magnetically coupled inductive devices that operate with AC (fluctuating) voltages. If you supplied DC to a transformer, it would simply look like a short circuit, and the secondary would stabilize to no voltage and no current.

This is because, in order to generate a current in a conductor from a magnetic field, either the magnetic field needs to be fluctuating or the conductor needs to be moving.

Will using a transformer to convert 230V to 12V DC consume more energy than using a few capacitors and resistors without a transformer?

no, the transformer is much more efficient <><><> HOWEVER- a transformer only changes the voltage of AC current- it does not change it to DC. You will still need diodes or rectifiers. You can also use a motor/generator- a 230v AC motor turns a 12 v DC generator.

How does auto transformer work with DC supply?

Transformers don't work with DC supplies - they only work on AC.

How does the starting of synchronous motor using dc generator as a load work-?

Starting of the synchronous motor using the DC generator creates a magnetic field.

Can you use a car as a backup generator for a house?

creative, and nice. Yes, if you some how rigged it (the wheel) up to a alternator/generator and into a transformer for home supply. you would have to jack the car up, or prop it up somehow, attach a generator by belt or welding, wire the generator to some capacity and then to an output transformer. Any motor can be made into a generator when attached to a power generation source, such as a alternator. DC MOTORS WILL NOT WORK. POLYPHASE INDUCTION MOTORS WILL NOT WORK AS THEY RELY ON TWO INPUT PHASES TO OPERATE AND CONTAIN NO MAGNETS.

Does electrical transformer use a DC or AC source?

A transformer is a device to convert high voltage AC to low voltage AC & vice-versa. It works on the principle of induction. Since induction occurs only in an AC supply, a transformer cannot work on DC.. So, it is not possible to convert DC supply to AC using transformer. You would need an inverter to convert DC to AC.

Which device you use to increase voltage from 220V to 11000V?

If it is AC, a transformer. If it is DC, a motor generator.

How does a DC transformer work?

transformer cannot be worked on DC because as the dc is constant there will be no change of flux & may lead to shot circuit.

How does auto transformer work with DC supply?

If DC is applied to the primary of a transformer is there any current in the secondary and if there is then whether ac or DC?

first, understand that a transformer is an AC DEVICE. it wont work on dc...

Do pulse transformer is work on dc supply?

Can a motor works as a generator?

since the physical construction of a DC motor and DC generator is the same,it can work either way.in other words, yes a DC motor can work as a DC generator(if you drive it by a primemover it will produce electricity).however its not possible with all AC motors.

Starting of the synchronous motor using the DC generator creates a magnetic field.

Why doesn't transformer work on a DC supply?

to have transformer action there should be an alternating magnetic flux.but dc supply cannot produce alternating flux.

Can booster transformer be used in dc distribution system?

No. Transformers work in AC systems, not in DC systems.
