Donato di Betto Bardi was the greatest of the early Tuscan sculptors and is regarded as the founder of modern sculpture. He produced statues complete and independent in themselves and not merely part of a building or structure. His works are found in the church of San Michele, the tombs of Pope John XXIII, the Cardinal Brancacci in Naples and Bartolomeo Aragazzi at Montepulciano. In Florence his marble basreliefs are now in the Bargello Museum .

Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi
The question should be asked the other way around: "Why is Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi called Donatello?" Donatello means simply "little Donato", and it is a typical Florentine nickname. He was the son of a labourer in the wool industry, and would have associated as a young man not with the merchants and the aristocrats but with those of his own social class - manual workers, artisans and shopkeepers. Many of the artists of the time had similar names, for example Tomasso Cassai was "Masaccio", meaning roughly "Big Tom" or "Clumsy Tom". His collaborator on the paintings in the Brancacci Chapel was Masolino, "Little Tom".
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were named after famous artists, who the creator loved, e.g. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Bounorrati , Donatello de Betto, and Raphael Sanzio. :)

He is, in part, known for his work in basso rilievo, a form of shallow relief sculpture that, in Donatello's case, incorporated significant 15th-century developments in perspectival illusionism
