Mostly Number 1 cylinder is the frontmost cylinder.
Some older cars ( Alfa's are one ) the number one cylinder is the back cylinder
in the front
On a Ford V8 engine # 1 plug is on the passenger side front of engine.

The distributor cap is installed with the marked # 1 position facing AWAY from the engine Start with the # 1 position and go CLOCKWISE ( 1 - 3 - 4 - 2 - spark plug firing order ) The engine cylinders / spark plugs are numbered 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 from front to rear
Can't post a diagram but the firing order on your 2.9 L is : 1 - 4 - 2 - 5 - 3 - 6 , the distributor rotation is clockwise (Helpfull) so start with the # 1 position on your distributor cap and go clockwise , next is #4 etc. Your engine cylinders are numbered 1 , 2 , 3 on passenger side of engine from front to back , and 4 , 5 , 6 on driver's side of engine from front to back.
with engine off disconnect timing censor wire, located near rear of passanger side valve cover. It should be a brown or tan wire, if engine is running and you unplug it engine will run rough. with wire unpluged, start engine set timing to 10 degrees, there should be a notch on your timing plate indicating this. firing order is 123456, cylinders 1-3-5 passenger side one being at front, 2-4-6 drivers side 2 being at front.
