After awhile Edward says his favourite night was when Bella agreed to marry him, and after he admits it they both hear a wolf howl in agony. Edward tells Bella that Jacob was listening and that he now knows they are engaged. Edward admits to saying that when he knew Jacob was listening, he was trying to hurt him. Bella starts crying and Edward gets Jacob so that they can talk. Edward leaves so they can talk privatly and Jacob tells her that he is going to kill himself unless she kisses him. They kiss and Bella finds herself not pushing him away but pulling him closer. WELLLLLLLLLLLL! This is all explained in Eclipse Jacob says he's going to leave to go back to the fight and Bella wants him to stay so she doesn't lose her best friend. Jacob says the only way he will stay is if she kisses him. So she does. Of course Jacob is stupid and was lying the whole time; he went back to the fight and only wanted the kiss. But in process of kissing Jacob, Bella understands how much she is in love with him, and how much it is not brotherly!!! So its crucial point in the book. The night before in the tent is really cold so Jacob, being "a toasty one-hundred and eight" warms her up so that she doesn't freeze. Edward doesn't really like that too much

In Eclipse, the beginning half of the book just deals with Bella's choice about Jacob and Edward. Jacob tells Bella flat out how he feels and then kisses her. Edward threatens to break his face, haha, and Bella doesn't talk to Jacob for a while after that. During all of this there have been foreshadowing moments when you hear about killings in Seattle. The Cullens, Jasper especially, realize that it is an army of newborn vampires. Also, someone has been in Bella's room, (a vampire), and they do not know who it was. Whoever did it knows about Alice's visions and can work around them so she can't see. Bella graduates, and on that day she figures out that the person with the army is coming after her, and they were in her room stealing her scent. The Cullens seek the help of the werewolves to fight the newborns who are coming to kill her, led by Victoria, a vampire who has a grudge against Bella because the Cullens killed her mate James in the first book. The night before the battle, Bella finally agrees to marry Edward. They lead a false trail that the newborns can follow and then Edward, Bella, and Jacob all camp out to keep Bella safe. In the morning, Jacob finds out that Bella is engaged and tricks Bella into kissing him by saying that he will kill himself to clear the way for Edward. The Cullens and werewolves beat the vampires, and Edward ends up having to fight Riley and Victoria with Seth, another werewolf. Jacob gets hurt during the battle and has Bella worried. Edward and Bella go back to the clearing where the Volturi meet them. They talk about how easily the defeated the vampires and how Bella is still human. They leave peacefully, Bella tells Jacob how she feels and that she chooses Edward, even though she knows now that she loves him, and the book pretty much ends.
