During the Mass, the only people who should approach and then enter the Sanctuary, in which the Altar is located, are priests, acolytes, and deacons (basically people who are assisting at the Mass).
However, Catholics when receiving communion do approach the Altar area but do not enter into it as the priest stands in front of the Sanctuary to distribute communion.
Catholics believe that communion bread has been turned into the Body of Christ during the Mass, so that is why they go up to the alter reverently.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Blessed Trinity, gave his life for our sins and we celebrate the Eucharist in remembrance of His great sacrifice. This is what Catholics remember when they go to Mass, but it is much more than this. The Mass is the actual re-presentation of Christ's sacrificed on Calvary. When a person is at Mass, what they are witnessing at the altar, through a miracle of God, is the actual, once and only event from 2000 years ago when Our Blessed Lord died on the cross. Remember that with God there is no time, at Mass, you are witnessing Our Blessed Lord's sacrifice from God's point of view. It is presented in an unbloody manner as Our Blessed Lord set it up.
If they are not in a state of serious sin, Catholics may receive communion every time they assist at Mass for a maximum of twice per day. However, if a Catholic receives communion twice during the day on Saturday and then go to the anticipated Mass on Saturday evening, they may receive a third time since that is considered a Sunday Mass.
I am Catholic and I am an altar server (altar servers are two people who help the priest), Catholics believe God is with them where ever they go, and as you notice, on our cross we call it a cruxifix and we are the only church who displays Jesus on our cross. For more information see link below.
Catholics never stopped going to church on Saturday, good Catholics usually go to confession on Saturday, and may attend the Saturday evening Mass as well.
