The Great Depression led to widespread unemployment. Extreme poverty was inflicted on both middle class and lower class and in some cases even upper class. Suicide rates jumped high. People lost their homes and farms. Many moved to live in 'Hoovervilles'. There was social unrest within the society. The effect even reflected on other countries and trade reduced substantially. The idea of social security also became prominent after the Great depression.
The people said "We didn't go hungry but we lived lean." During the Great Depression, unemployment reached 25% by 1933. 86,000 businesses failed between 1932-3. The national income in 1929 was 87.8 billion in 1933 it was 40.2 billion. Wages declined by 60%, 9 million savings accounts were wiped out, poverty became a way of life. People moved to the cities to find jobs but there were no jobs were left. The homeless built shanty-towns around cities and called them Hoovervilles in spite of Hoover's response to the Depression and people began to blame Hoover for the Depression.. People stood in the breadline from charity handouts. People started eating jackrabbits and called them Hooverhogs.
The major effect of the Great Depression/New Deal on America was expanded government intervention into new areas of social and economic affairs and the creation of more social assistance agencies at the national level. The relationship between the national government and the people changed drastically. The government took on a greater role in the everyday social and economic lives of the people. The New Deal programs of FDR also created a liberal political alliance made up of labor unions, blacks and other ethnic and religious minorities, intellectuals, the poor, and some farmers. These groups became the backbone of the Democratic Party for decades following the Depression. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the New Deal was to ease the economic hardship faced by many during the Great Depression. While not being able to end the Depression, the New Deal did preserve the people’s confidence in America’s institutions and government. The relief measures of the New Deal were considered a success. Not everyone supported the New Deal. As a formula for economic recovery, the New Deal failed. Many businessmen and financiers did not support the economic measures of the New Deal. With the recession of 1937, many business leaders and politicians claimed that FDR’s policies were a failure and the attempt to maintain prosperity during peacetime was not successful at all. The Great Depression and the New Deal measure led to the domestic programs of JFK’s New Frontier, and LBJ’s Great Society and War on Poverty. The New Deal measures have also an influence on the current Obama administration, in its attempts to stimulate the economy.
