William Jennings Bryan stood unsuccessfully for US President on three occasions. He was Secretary of State from 1913 to 1916.

Bryan is most famous for being the prosecutor in the "Scopes Monkey case" in which John Scopes was prosecuted for teaching the theory of evolution in high school. The trial took place in 1925

Bryan made his famous "Cross of Gold" speech in order to capture the Democratic nomination and get the free-silver plank into the platform. Bryan made the more exhaustive campaign ever made up to that point in history. He traveled more than 18,000 miles and spoke to an estimated 5 million people.
