An EIDER is a type of duck, and DOWN are the small fluffy feathers on a duck or other large bird. They are used to fill pillows and mattresses because they are very soft and don't mat up like manufactured fillings. They are also used to fill coats and vests for the same reason. Because they don't mat, they trap a lot of air providing good insulation. They are very warm.

∙ 11y agoEider is from the feathers of the female "Common Eider" which was used in nest building, and then "stolen" by man for bedding because of it's warmth and softness.
Now cultivated duck and goose feathers, are used as well as synthetic materials, instead of Eiderdown, but the name still is used.
