There was unemployment on a very small scale in the United Kingdom during world war one. Even though most of the men were away fighting and the women were in the factory or in clerical jobs, there was unemployed due to a vast number of reasons.

Employment worldwide after the war was scarce wherever there were areas very bombed out. In Germany jobs were so scarce the Allies created jobs for the remaining people, jobs like removing rubble or food distribution. In Japan jobs were sparse as well because of all the aerial bombing done by the Allies. Many of the men had been killed so the country had to figure out how to provide jobs for widows, mothers and sisters who lost their men.

In England, jobs were created by hiring the returning soldiers to do construction of new homes (to replace the destroyed homes) and public buildings. The men could not all be hired for that work so some struggled to find new jobs when they returned home.

In the US employment was more available to the returning GIs and other armed forces but not all of the men and women found jobs the minute they returned home. A GI bill was created by the US government to help the men and women who served to go to college, get cars and buy homes. New careers and professions were available to the college graduates. This increased the middle class white collar status in the USA.

Employment after World War 1 was discouraged for women. This was because women were taking up jobs in the market that men coming home from the war needed.

Unemployment increased after the war was over because the soldiers came home to no jobs. Nowadays, employers have to hold soldiers jobs when they are returning from war.
