Do self-employed people qualify for unemployment?

Under normal circumstances, a person operating as a sole proprietor (an unincorporated business owned by one person) would not be eligible for unemployment benefits. This includes most independent contractors, freelance workers, or anyone else who receives a 1099 instead of the standard W-2. However, if the business is structured as an S corporation (a small business that is a separate entity from its owners) and the individual is listed on the payroll as a salaried employee, then they may be eligible for unemployment in most states.

Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act passed March 27, though, self-employed and gig workers who can no longer work due to the COVID-19 pandemic may qualify for unemployment benefits.

Contact your state's unemployment office to find out more information and file your claim if you need to.

How does computerization contribute to unemployment?

As computers are developed with the purpose of automating tasks, aka doing work without a user's attention, they take away from the workload of real people. I doubt any company wants to employ more help than they need, because they lose money, so people get let go, thus increasing unemployment.

Who is included in the unemployment rate?

The unemployment rate is calculated by the number of people that have filed for unemployment benefits in each state. The figure can be somewhat misleading because this does not include the people who are not eligible for benefits, those that have exhausted benefits, or people that did not file for whatever reason. It is also misleading because the state's rate is calculated by the number of people collecting unemployment in that state. If I worked in Nevada, but moved to Florida, and become unemployed in Florida, then I have to contact Nevada to file for benefits - since my wages were in Nevada. There are also many people that have multiple wages in many states (construction workers, sales professionals, etc.). They have the unique ability of filing a combined wage claim and can chose the state (out of those they worked in), and file their claim in that state. So, the figures of the states where people are unemployed are often misleading.

Can a school bus driver get unemployment benefit in Minnesota?

Sorry to say, but in Minnesota as a school bus driver you can not claim unemployment like every other seasonal job. School bus drivers are lumped in with teachers even though most of the time they aren't given the option to spread their pay over 12 months. This means that many have zero income for a few months a year.
