Why Liberia and Burma use the same measuring system as US?

User Avatar
The Imperial system of measurement came from England. At one time, England dominated most of he world with their powerful navy and established a colony in what is now the USA. Britain ruled Burma, (now officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,) from 1824 to 1948 so they imposed their system of weights and measures. Liberia was set up by citizens of the United States as a colony for former African-American slaves. The USA used Imperial measurement so they would establish Imperial measurement in their colony.

Why wasn't Liberia colonized?

User Avatar
In a way, it was - though not officially by another country. Liberia was set up as a place where freed slaves from the USA could rule themselves. An American society under president Monroe bought land there and paid for freed slaves who wanted to go to be transported there. The "colonization" started in 1816, and Liberia became independent in 1847. However, the country called Liberia included some land held by the indigenous people, who had been living in the area before the freed slaves arrived (known as Americo-Liberians or Americo- Libe). So there was always tension between the two groups, and the government was dominated by Americo-Liberians until 1980 - the indigenous people didn't get votes until 1951. (Since the same party ruled for 133 years, it was often said that Liberia had the most stable government in the world.) Many of the Americo-Liberians viewed themselves as an elite, and better than the native people and not as part of the general populace. - People from other ethnic groups were often called "natives". For this reason, Liberia could be said to be a colony without a country to be colonized from! (See )

Which nation gave Liberia his independent?

User Avatar
No nation did, per se. Liberia has never been subjected to official colonial rule by a foreign country. However, in 1821, the American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Color of the United States founded a colony there whose intent was to send free African-Americans and liberated slaves to live there (which was a source of some controversy), hence the name "Liberia." This American Colonization Society acquired rights to Monrovia, what is now the capital, and they had chief control over the country. From my understanding, Liberia Independence Day, which was July 26, 1847, came about after the Society declined and the Liberians proclaimed their independence from the Society, and its borders expanded to what is now known as the whole nation of Liberia. Americans came to acknowledge Liberia's sovereignty.
