In 1980 I overhalled my Chevy V-8 engine ran great when cold and hot . After, approx. 30 min started to run rough than quit. No fun when the engine is operating a boat. No way could you start the engine. Next 5 days starts and ran fine until approx 30 min. then the same old thing. I checked fuel system, condenser, timing, distributer, spark plugs gap, all OK. Removed each plug wire when running, spark OK. After about a week I'm about to go nuts. One day with the engine hot and killed, I removed each plug one at a time and rotated the engine for each with the starter ( Of course I'm at the dock ) Found no spark at the gap on three plugs. Spark was shorting to ground inside the plug cermatic housing . I had tested the plugs at the local service station prior to final assembly of the engine, of course the plugs were cold and tested OK. I replaced the plugs with new and that solved the problem ( Moral to the story. I should have inatalled new plugs in the first place . How would I know when they tested OK when cold. Maybe trying to save a buck ???)
try your idle control valve also your fuel pump i had a problem similar to yours and it was the fuel pump
It stalls even when warm
Does it miss on acceleration or at idle? If on accel I would be looking at the plugs and wires
Really bad fuel economy, engine runs rough when warm (possibly won't start or hard to start when warm), possibly black smoke from the exhaust, unusual noises from the fuel pump, and general poor performance.
Likely needs a tune up. Replace all spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap (if it has one) and air filter. If it still runs rough you will have to go to a mechanic.
temp senser or spark coil
Could be a plugged catalytic converter or bad coil. Both will act up when they get warm.
If carb. perhaps choke is not working properly
Had the same problem with 2001 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC. Thermostat was the problem. Engine was overheateing causeing rough shifting and warm air out of AC. $15.00 Fix!!!
check your coolant temp sensor also is the ses light on,posible egr fault
Seeing as it is a diesel engine it has to warm up first in the colder weather. You say that you are starting the engine early in the morning? Well the black smoke may be caused by he motor being cold or simply by the fact that it is a big diesel engine. The rough ride you are referring to is caused by the motor being under-heated, and then as the engine heats up it smooths out.
check coolant temp sensor, the computer is still running on open loop, doesnt know engine is cold, unplug sensor, it should run the same, do you have check engine light on ??
