If you are fairly young and want to live a little before settling down then no, this is not abnormal and a smart way to go. Communicate to your boyfriend that you are not ready for commitment and that you don't want to hold him back either, but you do love him, but also must experience life a little more before commitments to him. Don't expect him to wait around for you and don't make promises you can't keep by telling him your simply need 'head space' and you could get back together again. You are not ready to settle down into a committed relationship so it's best to go your separate ways. You can't have it both ways.
