Not at all. Bat Mitzvah and Bar Mitzvah are both social functions rather than spiritual ones. The ceremonies are societal, helpful for the families involved.

Is Drake Bell Christian?

Yes. Drake is considered Jewish by Jewish law and self identifies as Jewish. He grew up in a Jewish neighborhood of Toronto with his mother, attended a primarily Jewish high school, and had a Bar Mitzvah (Jewish coming of age ceremony). Though Drake's father is not Jewish, according to Jewish law one is Jewish if their mother was Jewish.

Do you have to be Jewish to have a Bat mitsvah?

Yes, you do have to be Jewish to have a Bat Mitzvah (and female for that matter). A Bat Mitzvah literally means "daughter of the commandments," the only people who are "required" to fulfill the commandments are Jewish people. That said, not all Jewish people fulfill all of the commandments and therefore over time, the Bat Mitzvah has come to mean a coming of age ceremony for a Jewish child. This child/young adult is now ready to take his or her place in the community as an adult. This means, being counted as part of a minyan (10 people to complete a congregation at a specific service); she is now required to fast on Fast Days (Yom Kippor for instance) and other requirements. A non-Jew can certainly do the same studying as a Jewish person but they cannot complete the formal training. For example, generally, though not always, a Bat Mitzvah reads from Torah, a non-Jew cannot read from the Torah. A Bat Mitzvah will finish a prayer by saying the Chatimah (which seals the prayer) a non-Jewish person cannot do this in the name of a Jewish community. Just like Jewish people cannot take part in certain aspects of a non-Jewish service, it is also true that a non-Jew cannot take part in all parts of a Jewish service.

What does the bar mitzvah boy do before his ceremony?

He often gets called up to read from the Torah in front of the synagogue congregation. Really, though, becoming Bar Mitzvah happens regardless of what one does. It simply means becoming an adult and becoming responsible for one's actions. A Jewish boy becomes Bar Mitzvah when he turns 13.

Why do girls have to have a Bat Mitzvah?

Bar and bat mitzvah are not ceremonies but a legal status -- when a boy becomes 'bar mitzvah' (literally, ' a son of the commandment') or when a girl becomes 'bat mitzvah' (a daughter of the commandment), he or she is legally an adult and obligated to observe all the commandments (up to that time the child's parents are responsible). So you just become bar mitzvah by living for 13 years and a day (boys) or 12 years and a day (girls -- though some Jewish denominations also place this at 13 and a day). No ceremony is necessary, and before the 20th century, it was hardly marked at all: boys would be called up to the ceremonial reading of the Torah in synagogue on a week day and would start to lay tefillin (phylacteries) daily; since girls did not participate in these rituals, little if anything was done to mark the day. However, in the 20th century, due to all sorts of pressures and desires (e.g. sociological - the desire to have a rite parallel to Christian confirmation; spiritual/religious - the desire to involve the maturing child in their religion and provide an opportunity for spiritual education and reflection; social - the desire to mark a rite of passage more visibly), the customs surrounding bar/batmitzvah have developed enormously. The very first public bat mitzvah only took place in 1922. Since then, entirely optional events like the party have become very central. Liskeardziz
