An example of hyperbole in Tom Sawyer is when Tom exaggerates his injury after getting into a fight with another boy by pretending to be on his deathbed. Another example is when Tom convinces his friends to help him whitewash a fence by making it seem like a fun and exciting task, even though it is actually a chore.

1. The Church's uncushioned pews would seat about 300 people. ( p.26)

2. At last he was satisfied that time had Ceased and eternity began. (p.62)

3. Some vague figures approached through the gloom swinging an old fashioned tin lantern that freckled the ground with innumerable little spangles of light. (p. 64)

4. He was so brimful of exultation that he could hardly hold himself when the old lady came back and stood above the wreck discharging lightnings of wrath from over her spectacles. (p.20)

although my teacher said that number 3 is an example of exaggeration personally i think its a metaphor.

on page 27 of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer about half-way down the page you will read, He was from Constantinople, twelve miles away-so he had traveled, and seen the world-these very eyes had looked upon the county courthouse-which was said to have a tin roof. From the text you can see that apparently people don't travel much and if you do you have seen the world in the children's eyes. This is one of the best examples and is somewhat humorous.
