a chloroplast is enclosed by at least two membranes separated by narrow intermembrane space that constitutes an outer compartment. The inner membrane encloses a second compartment containing the fluid called stroma. Free ribosomes and copies of the chloroplast the chloroplasts genome are present in the stroma. The stroma surounds a third compartment, the thykaloid space, delineated by the thykaloid membrane. Interconnected thykaloid sacs are stacked to form structures called grana, which are futher connected by thin tubules between individual thykaloids.
