1. Christians believe that your 'brother' is not just your male sibling but everyone in your community ~ your friends, your enemies, your neighbours, relatives and you have a responsibility to anyone who has a need . You should relate this to the Parable of the Good Samaritan told by Jesus in Luke 10 versus 27-37. Here our neighbour is anyone of any race, creed or social background who is in need. There are needy people all around us and there is no reason why we should walk on by and refuse top help...only selfish people do this.
2. This parable describes acts of mercy we all can do every day. These acts do not depend on wealth, ability or intelligence but a willingness to see people in need with a loving and Godly attitude like Jesus did. We have no excuse to neglect those in real dire need. The sheep represent those who saw others in need and responded accordingly and the goats were those who those to fulfil their own selfish desires and needs/wants and ignore those of other less fortunate than us. Christians are led to bring about social change because they know that on the day of judgement they will be accountable to God. They won't be able to say to God "Oh, it's not my problem if they are sick, hungry, naked or homeless...someone else (church or government) will sort it out". And if they do they will be separated from God when they die i.e. go to hell. Harsh I know but Christians are not just do-gooders but merely want the world to see the sin in the world and want these people to be 'saved' by the Good News of Christ.
