How many 18 to 20 year olds were killed in the Afghanistan War?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

None from the United Kingdom nor the Unites States, and I suspect neither the rest of NATO. Some Afghan people may begin fighting at young ages.

However, both the UK and the USA allow certain under-18s to enlist. Both countries have policies forbidding the deployment of under-18s to any combat zone. However, it has come out that several dozen under-18s were deployed to Afghanistan during 2003-2005; in both countries' cases, the deployments seems to be anomalies (either mistaken orders, or mass deployments of units without proper checks on eligibility), and, so far, have not been repeated.

Why did the US become involved with Afghanistan?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Taliban government in Afghanistan supported global terrorism. Specifically, the Taliban provided a safe haven for Al Qaeda and refused to turn over Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks.

However, going back to the early 1980's, the US was involved with arming and financing the Mujaheddin, an Islamist guerrilla force that fought against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The US involvement was based on the "enemy of my enemy" philosophy of the Cold War.

Currently (May 11, 2014) the US is not involved in any declared wars, and hasn't been since August, 1945.
