When his father had been released from Marshalsea Debtors Prison and returned home, Charles' mother wanted him to keep working at Warren's Blacking Company in order to supplement the family income. His father disagreed and brought Charles home; he would soon return to school. From the time he became succesful, his parents became utterly dependant upon him for their income. He deeply resented this, although he never refused them. He would later see his father's habits of lavish spending in one of his sons, Walter; Walter would die in India at 22, broke and miserable.
