MDF is potentially a very sustainable material. The material is made from waste saw dust that comes from wood mills, it is also made of wood thinning's which are small trees and bits that are not suitable for making planks with, so the wood side of it if it comes from FSC managed forests uses a waste and low grade tree material that is forever renewable. Even better than using virgin wood, I know of at least one company that uses recycled wood to make it's MDF from, this should be more widespread. Now the unsustainable part is the glue that holds MDF dust together, around 12% of the board is glue and it is derived from petrol so isn't sustainable. My aim is to help promote a natural glue that is made from natural materials and that enables the MDF boards to be recycled into more MDF at the end of it's life or to be burned in your fire at home with no more harmfull fumes than that of ordinary wood. Currently in 2011 MDF is not easily recyclable because of the way the glue and sawdust are held together, in order to recycle it the glue needs releasing from the sawdust. But I don't understand why it can't just be ground into powder and used that way. So in short it isn't yet fully sustainable. Tristan Titeux Eco Fitted Furniture Pioneer. www.CustomCarpentry.co.uk
