The cardinal is the state bird of several states. A member of the family Fringillidae, New World Seedeaters, the cardinal is one of the grosbeaks, finches with large conical beaks for crushing seeds. Relatives are the blue, rose breasted, evening, and black headed grosbeaks. Male cardinals are among the most beautiful of North American birds, and come to feeders readily if sunflower or safflower seeds are available.

Latin name is Cardinalis cardinalis.
