On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was unveiled by President Grover Cleveland.
The idea of the Statue of Liberty was started in the early 1870's. The artist did not actually start on the statue until 1875. The Statue of Liberty was finished in 1885 and erected in 1886 in New York Harbor. The entire statue is made of copper and weighs 62,000 pounds not including the base.

Frederic Bartholdi began his design of the Statue of Liberty in 1876. He completed sculpting the state in 1884. The Statue of Liberty arrived in the New York Harbor in 1885 and was not dedicated until 1886. Restoration on the statue was completed in 1938, from 1984 to 1986, and again from 2011 to 2012.

Yes it means independance and when people from other places came to America the would see the statue as a good sign or a new start

It took nine years before the Statue of Liberty was completed in 1884. it was a gift to the United States and had to be taken apart in order to send it. This icon of freedom had to be put back together piece by piece by the United States and dedicated on October 28, 1886.
