The reasons each character went to Vietnam vary.

Peewee grew up in a poverish family, and when he wanted something (shoes, for example) he was unable to get them liek everyone else. He figured if he jopined the army, they woudl give everyone the same thing.

Lobel joined the army because he was supected of being homosexual. He wanted to prove to his fatehr that he was a real man by joining the army, however his plan failed, and only deepened the rift between them.

Perry joined the army ti support his mother and younger brther Kenny. he passed up collage to join and send back is earnings to his family.

As for Jenkins and Johnson, I'm not sure, but I hope what I did have will help you.
