Fellowship with the Lord results in sharing His sufferings (Phil. 2:5-8; 3:10; Col. 1:24). Fellowship included financial support. Paul used the term koinonia to denote financial contributions he was collecting from Gentile believers to take to Jerusalem for relief of the saints who lived there (Romans 15:26-27; 2 Cor. 8:4; 9:13). Everyone offered what they were able to offer to benefit others: Jewish Christians, their spiritual blessings; Gentile Christians, their material blessings. Such mutual sharing of one's blessings is a clear and profound expression of Christian fellowship. Another biblical meaning of fellowship is found in the Lord's Supper. In the Lord's Supper, the cup is "communion of the blood of Christ," and the bread, "communion of the body of Christ" (1 Cor. 10:16). Such communion could not be shared with both Christ and other gods or supernatural beings, so believers do not partake in pagan religious meals where they would share "fellowship" with evil, supernatural forces, or demons (1 Cor. 10:19-21).
