What is a function of the clutch in the vehicle?

The purpose of a clutch on a vehicle is to disconnect the drive of the engine from the gearbox (this would be required when the vehicle is stationary or to change gear). While the engine is running the crankshaft is continually turning, It is the crankshaft that turns the gearbox and via the gearbox the road wheels. Obviously there are times when the engine is running but drive is not required, The clutch is the mechanism by which this is achieved.

Does a MK2 golf 1.3 have overdrive?

Only if it has a completely different gearbox (with overdrive) fitted. You would then have to find an engine to fit the gearbox. You may have problems fitting this into the bodyshell, so I suggest you source a secondhand body from a car that will fit the engine and gearbox. Maybe you could fit the body from the car you took the engine and gearbox out of? Then all you need is an interior, driveshafts, brakes, wheels etc. and the job is done!

Why does the gearstick shake in your 206 1.4hdi at 50mphi changed both driveshafts and wheels and still no good?

Dont hold me to this i had the same problem in a clio sounds like your engine stabeliser is either not connected or its come lose i would even check the engine mounts for a worn bush. for the gearsrick to shake theres got to be play in something connected to it i.e. gearbox or engine. i don't know why you've changed the wheels and driveshafts if either one of them was to blame you would feel vibrations through the cars body and steering wheel.
