Connecticut's state flag design originates from the seal of Saybrook Colony which was established in 1639. The seal featured 15 grapevines and a scroll that read "Sustinet qui transtulit". When Saybrook was purchased in 1644 by the Connecticut Colony they acquired rights to the seal. They rearranged the position and wording of the motto, now "Qui Transtulit Sustinet ("He who transplanted, sustains"). They also included only 3 grapevines, instead of 15, on the flag (most likely to represent the original 3 colonies of New Haven, Saybrook and Connecticut/Hartford. It was designated the official state flag by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1897.http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/thumb/4/44/180px-Flag_of_Connecticut.svg.pngGo to this link to find your answer. Connecticut's State flag is five feet six inches in length and four feet four inches in width. It is not as wide as most other state flags. The background color of the flag is azure blue silk, which represents a cloudless sky. There is a white shield in the center with a gold and silver border. The shield has a picture of three grapevines, which represent the first three towns in Connecticut. They also represent the early settlers' belief in God. They believed that God had brought them from England and planted them, or settled them, in the New World where he would sustain them, or help them survive and grow. They got this idea from words in the Bible, and this is the meaning of Connecticut's state motto. Just below the shield is a white banner with a gold border. On the banner, in dark blue, is the motto written in Latin: "Qui Transtulit Sustinet", which means, "He who transplanted still sustains."Connecticut's state flag was adopted in 1897.
