Answer poisonous gasses and flame throwers. AnswerBlitzkreig meaning lightening war which was a doctrine developed between the World Wars to concentrate on delivering a mechanised coordinated (with air and artillery) attack on specific points of the "front" without regard to the flanks (sides). Initially overwhelming more traditionally organised and equipped armies it did suffer from isolating the attacking force and relied on the momentum of the attackers and the confusion and collapse of the defenders. Individual weapons systems such as tanks armoured cars and half tracks, rocket launchers and support aircraft such as the Stuka aided the doctrine. Germany did not have enough mechanised troops to exploit the successes which worked well in Europe but foundered in the greater distances involved in Russia. Gasses and flame throwers were developed in the first world war and Western Armies were prepared for gas attacks after their experiences then.
