Texas was a part of Mexico for about 15 years (1821-1836). The period started when Mexico gained independence from Spain, and ended when Texas gained independence from Mexico with the Texas Revolution.

Spain kept Mexico as an overseas territory for 300 years: from 1521 when it conquered the Aztecs during the Fall of Tenochtitlan, until 1821 when the Insurgent Army (or Army of the Three Gurantees) entered Mexico City.
