I had the same problem a few months back. I checked the linkage at the trans & that was not it. My buddy, ex mach., told me to take out the gauge cluster & inspect the shift rod that connects to the steering column. Sometimes the rod will crack. Mine was a plastic clip that broke that the shift rod connected to. Being 10:00 at night when I finally got to it, I used a couple small zip ties to secure it where it was. Since then I have not gotten back to it but it is still holding.
