You can resolve the problem temporarily or permanently by:
Temporary fix:
1- Remove the small plastic circle just to the right of the shift rod on the base of the shift platform ( It is about 1/2 inch in diameter and is cut out for removal)
2- With the engine running,
3- Use a screwdriver or other object to fit in the slot that is under the plastic circle you just removed.
4- Now your shifter should shift out of park while you push down on the screwdriver to activate the emergency release
Permanent fix
Check your brake lights, you probably blew the fuse. If the fuse is blown, replace (Fuse #42 on some Focus models) the brake light fuse with a matching new 15 Amp fuse. This will resolve the brake light problem and at the same time correct the shifter problem because they are on the same circuit. This is your permanent fix and will not
require any of the above 4 steps if you can replace the fuse immediately.
If it is not the brake light, you need to see a good automotive electrical technician.
NOTE of CAUTION: Be sure not to use any higher amp fuses, or you could produce electrical problems and even cause a fire. Don't risk it.
Check brake lights--if they do not work shift interlock will not release
You can view the 2000 Ford Focus owners manual online at : www . motorcraft service . com ( no spaces ) Click on Owner Guides ( page 134 explains what to do with the brake / shift interlock if your gearshift lever is stuck in Park with the brake pedal depressed )
2430 2002 stuck in park what to do?
Make sure your car is on.
If a Ford Focus is stuck in park, you should first check to make sure the gear is not stuck. You also need to make sure you have your foot on the brake in order to move it out of park.
Sounds like your shift interlock mechanism is jammed. Assuming yours has a floor-mounted shifter, there's usually an override button on those, which requires you to pull up the rubber boot around the shift column.
No it just aids you in parking unfortunatly
If your Ford Contour is stick in park, the transmission may be going out. You gear shift may also not be all the way in place.
No , I'm not sure what year Ford started this but it's called the brake shift interlock , where you have to have the brake pedal depressed to shift out of PARK . Unfortunately you don't mention what year of Ford F-150 but the instructions are usually in the owners manuals telling you what to do if you can't shift out of PARK with the brake pedal depressed
You need to start the car, put your foot on the brake pedal, and then you can get outta PARK!!
Shift cable needs to be adjusted.
You have to step on the brake pedal and hold it, then shift into gear.
